2008. Lost Outlook attachments and temp files. How to find them.

Outlook and temp files are lost. Why? How can I protect myself from this problem?

To avoid this problem in the future, instead of opening attachments directly from the email, right-click on the attachment and choose to "Save As" the file so you can select where you want the file saved (e.g., your Documents or Pictures folder).

Then open the file from Windows Explorer instead. But if you really want to know, Windows does store the message. The actual storage location will vary. And it is strange.

User > AppData > Local > Microsoft > Windows > Temporary Internet Files > Content.Outlook > 9PDH6FAT.

To determine that location, go through the steps to do the Save As, and note the default location. But the next time it may change. So remember to do the Save As and specify the location.

2010. Saved email addresses in Outlook.

I use Outlook to send/receive my email. When I type a new email, I start typing the address and I can fill in the choices. How do I maintain this?

Type-ahead vs. Contacts. MS Outlook has this great feature called AutoComplete or type-ahead.

When you are creating your email and you start to type the addressee Outlook provides a list of email addresses. This list is made up from all the email addresses you have entered over time. This list is not the same as your Contacts list. And if you change computers or even if modify the Outlook profile you may lose this list.

Some people are lost without it. The good news is the autocomplete list is stored as a file. But you have to find it and copy it over to your new system. Depending on the version of Outlook you are coming from or going to this technique to copy it changes. So you have to search for those details. You can import the autocomplete list from your contacts, search for this option as well. Since this is not something normally done please make plans to include this in any changes to your Outlook mail system.

2011. Picture of computer screen?

Picture of computer screen. What's the best way?

Snipping tool, Snagit, GreenShot, Cell phone!!! There are a number of tools available to capture all or parts of your Windows screen. But there is a way to do this without the tools.

Yes use your cell phone. Sometimes this is easier that the tools available. Windows 10 has a built in tool called Snipping Tool. Snagit is a great tool, and GreenShot. They all have similar features like the whole screen, specific windows, and using the tools to copy a specific area.

They also give you the ability to do basic editing and saving to files, email, and the the clipboard. All are easy to use and make it easy to send that image to your support person so they have a clear idea of the problem you may have.

2004. Video doorbell

Published by Ken

I installed a video doorbell at home, and I keep getting notifications all the time on my phone from the doorbell. It's making me crazy! Is there some way to turn these off?

I assume you're complaining because you're getting too many notifications of people driving by or walking by your house. You probably do want to get notified if someone rings your doorbell but if you want to cut down on motion notifications you have a couple of options.

You can completely turn off notifications for this application on both Android and IOS. On the other hand if you do, you're not going to be notified about someone ringing the doorbell. Another option is for almost every video doorbell out there you can restrict the range or the limits on the sensitivity of the motion sensor on the doorbell itself. That's probably a better choice than turning off all notifications/

2009. Security patch for XP

I hear there is a special security patch for XP. I thought XP wasn't supported any more. What should I do.

The patch is plugging a hole in the Remote Desktop Service function. Once you download it, it is simple to apply the fix and only takes seconds. Our advice is apply the patch if you are still using XP. This also applies to Windows 2003 Server.

Anytime you apply special patches we strongly recommend do an image backup so if something bad happens with the patch you can always revert back to before the patch.

You should give serious consideration to upgrading your system to supported versions of the Operating System. Remember Windows 7 is supposed to lose support this coming January.

2006. Browser start page

Published by Ken.

When I first open my browser, I'd love it if the start page showed me a list of sites I generally visit, so I can just click links to take me to my favorite sites. Is there some way to set this up?

Back in the day I used Yahoo as my start page because it would allow me to set up various widgets on the page that would take me places that I wanted to go or display information I wanted to see.

Google had a feature like this as well and I switched to that for a while but I no longer use Yahoo and Google killed the feature as they do with many of their features from year to year.

At this point I use a start page feature called You can go on your web browser create a free account and it will allow you to set up links to whatever pages you want. There's lots of free widgets you can use on that page. It's pretty easy to set up,  it's free,  and it works great. So I would suggest looking at There are several other Start page sites out there some of them display pretty pictures others do other features. I just want to list of links I can go to so check that out

2012. Safe links and emails?

With all of the bad emails spam, virus how can I be sure I am not being taken. I just got an email that said it was from Microsoft. How can I tell? The person's email was prefixed by a "v-".

Actually this is not a scam. The "v-" is indicating this person is not a MS employee but a vendor approved by MS. Another way to check is to hover your mouse over any links. Make sure they go to legitimate URL's .

When you see a link the actual display on the screen may say, but if you hover your mouse over it, the actual URL you will go to may be something like You should always hover over every URL before click on the link. This applies to email addresses as well. Remember when you do a search in any search engine like "Microsoft Support", the search will produce a list of possible solutions, BUT just because it says Microsoft Support doesn't mean you are reaching Microsoft. Check that URL to make sure you are going to the place you want to go to.

2019. 6 numbers not really enough any more.

I haven't been using a lock code on my phone. Do I really need one? How long should it be?

6 numbers not really enough any more.

The default for most phones is a 4 digit lock code that's laughably
simple to break into. Honestly people can look at the grease spots on your phone and know what your 4 digits are. Then it's a very quick process of guessing what order you use those 4 digits.

So 4 digits not enough, 6 digits really isn't enough.

These days given the availability of software that will break into your phone you need to at least use an 8 digit pass code if you're concerned about the security of the contents of your phone.
I know you say to yourself I'm never anywhere where I don't have my phone with me and if I left it somewhere I would immediately know.  Sure you can believe that if you like,  but put a pass code on it, sooner or later you'll be glad you did.

2025 Multiple email account on cell phone

I was surprised that someone asked me about getting multiple email addresses on my cell phone. What options do we have?

All your cell phone manufacturers have an email application on their phones. In many cases you can add your favorite email application to the phone. Office 365 provides Outlook for your Phone, Android, or Microsoft phone. Yes there is still Microsft phones.

All of the mail applications allow you to have multiple email accounts on them. You can have your gmail account, your business account or even that account that no one else but those special people know about on your phone.

If you want to add other accounts, use your favorite search engine to tell you how to add more accounts.

2024 Large Attachments or links?

Emails with large attachments. How can I send people large attachments.

The cell phones have provided great photos with great quality. We also create some very large attachments that we need to send to others. But most email systems have a limit to the size of an attachment(s). It you send this to someone you might not know if they ever received it.

There are better ways. Especially if you have limited bandwidth. If you have gmail, it can automatically replace the attachment in your email, store it in the cloud and replace it in the email with a link to the file. This way the person receiving the attachment can download it at their convenience instead of using up their streaming Netflix.

There are other ways to send large attachments. If you use DropBox, OneDrive, or Google drive, you can put those files in your cloud storage and send the links in the email. Give this some thought in the future when you try to send your 26GB MP4 video of the cat to your friends.

2023 Desktop access from other computers?

I want to go to another computer to have my same desktop and applications. How?

This can be interesting, and difficult at the same time. If you are in a Domain network environment, there is a option to have Roaming Profiles. So if you go to another computer in the domain office your desktop will follow you.

If you are not in the Domain office environment and need this ability with multiple computers you can set up an account at Microsoft's Azure cloud system to accomplish this.

But I think you really are interested in having the ability from another computer to actually access your computer and run your system remotely. Malibu Software uses this technique to support their clients. We use TeamViewer. I can access (with my clients permission) all the computers remotely.

But you as an individual have other options. Windows comes with Remote Desktop. If you turn this feature on your home computer you can access that computer from anywhere. There are also other companies that provide this ability like VNC, GoToMyPC and more. Some are free if you do this for personal reasons. These products offer secure remote access and I have used this many times in my business and personal needs. Great options.

2022.. Search for it!

75% of the questions I get I don't know the answer. How can we encourage people to search for your own solution.

Google is your friend!!! Or you may use Bing or any of the other internet search web sites. I would say that at least 50% of the questions I get asked I have to go to my search engine web site and ask the question there to get good reliable answers.

You may want to think about the question so you include important facts to solve the problem. Like if you have to determine how to change the your email password, make sure you include the email service provider. For example "How do I change my email password, I use Office 365 for my email". Or I use yahoo mail, how do I change my password.

Try to be concise and you don't need to put in all of the correct adjectives. If you don't get a good answer, try changing the wording or even try a different search site. I often times go to another search engine and ask the same question.

So Bing/Google/or whatever is your friend. Ask them. But you may want to turn off your search history JIC.

2021. Sleep, logoff, sign-out?????

What does sleep do in Windows? Should I lock, sign-out, logoff, sleep,

This is actually a great question. In Windows 10 you have more options. The sign-out option is like the old Logoff. When you sign-out all your applications are closed, and your security access is removed but the computer remains powered up. You must login and restart your applucations.

Lock leaves all your applications running but you need to login to gain access. The power stays on so backups scheduled can continue to run. Sleep puts your computer into a very low-power mode, and saves its current state in its RAM. Sleep is similar to Lock, but is intended for a short time away. It requires you to logon if you specifies this in the Power/sleep options.

Then you have Hibernate (on many systems), and shutdown. Hibernate is like Lock, but the computer saves everything and shuts off power. So when you start the computer back up it loads the status of when you did the hibernate and starts faster.

Shutdown is like Logoff but the power is turned off so it takes longer to start up again. Read up on what is the best option for your needs.

2020. Using Malwarebytes vs. MS Defender vs. ???

Using Malwarebytes vs. MS Defender, corporate versus personal

Business vs. personal antivirus has some important differences. For your personal antivirus Windows 10 comes with MS Defender. It has become a very good product. It ranks up there with some of the other personal antivirus tools like Malwarebytes.

If you feel you need more than your basic protection give some consideration to Malwarebytes instead of just what come with Windows. Sophoes is a great personal antivirus for your MAC.

But the question asked about if your small to medium business should consider a differenc5t AntiVirus. I recommend Trend Micro antivirus for your business. The main difference is you have a server and the antivirus is distributed to the server and then to you workstations. You have centralized control and this will give your IT people more time for other issues.

Look at Trend Micro for business antivirus, and Malwarebytes for personal PC, and Sophos for your MAC. But if you want to save some money on your PC stay with MS defender that comes with Windows 10.

2016. Add basic apps to your PC and MAC

Posted by Ken.

I was thinking of getting a new Windows PC, and I have a lot of downloaded apps I'll need to reinstall. Is there some easy way to find and install all the downloadable applications I need to use?

If you like me you have a bunch of public domain and shareware applications on your computer like your web browsers, perhaps your messaging applications. You have some media applications like Audacity or the Netflix application, maybe use Dropbox for online storage. All of these can be downloaded for free from the internet but you have to go one by one and get them installed on a new computer.

There is a website for Windows P.C.'s that makes this extremely easy it's called . It allows you just to check off the applications you want installed tell it to go and it just installs them all on your computer for you. It's a simple way to get all the applications you need. This only works for Windows P.C.'s. However for MAC applications you'll need to find a website called does basically the same thing is except for MAC computers. It's a great way to get your new computer set up quickly.

2014. Apple credit

Published by Ken.

I've heard lots of excitement about Apple's credit card, coming out in Summer 2019. It's just a credit card! Why is anyone interested? And should I get one?

If you're really into Apple you'll probably just rush out and get one. The deal is if you like instant gratification the card generally is approved right away if it's going to be approved. If Apple pay is generally available where you shop, if you like simple rewards because this card gives you 3 percent back for purchases made at Apple and 1.5 percent everywhere else. If you sometimes miss payment deadlines, well Apple is forgiving on this. It's probably a good deal.

It's all handled through Apple's wallel App and it's simple to use the card. If you use Android. If you want travel rewards. If you can't use Apple Pay or if you'd like to add a 2nd authorized user it's probably not a good fit for you.

The card is great for Apple users it's not really very interesting for other people. The cards not currently available as we record this but will be available soon. I'll probably get one why not it's free and it will give me a good discount on future Apple products.

2017. Keep my email address at comcast?

Posted by Ken.

I have an email address at Comcast, and I'm thinking of switching ISPs. I hate to lose that email address, as it's my main email address. If I leave Comcast, can I continue to use my Comcast email address?
We've said over the years many many times that if you have an ISP that provides you with an email address you should perhaps think about using a different email address for this very problem. If you use an email address at and then leave Comcast do you have to change your email address?

Well it turns out that you really don't have to change it even if you aren't using Comcast as your ISP. I checked on this and Comcast allows you to keep the email address if you visited the email address that is logged into it within 90 days of switching from Comcast to some other ISP and you'll need to check your e-mail at least once every 9 months to keep it active. But if you do those things Comcast will let you keep the email address active.

I can't speak to other ISP's. You'll have to check with them individually, but for Comcast that's how it works. So yes you can keep that wonderful email address even after you move on to a different ISP.

2015. Free Ink?

Ken really posted this.

When I got a new HP printer, the installation tried to convince me to sign up for HP's Instant Ink program. I declined then, Should I reconsider? Can this ever be a good deal?

H.P.'s instant program is a program where they'll send you a cartridge when you need it and they charge you per print that you make. If your printer supports instant and if you don't print much at all the Free Level is a great deal. It gives you up to 15 pages per month for free. So you'll never pay for ink if you use an instant ink printer use the instant ink program and you only print up to 15 pages per month.

That's great if you need to print a form occasionally or print a label. The moment a single letter of print ends up on a piece of paper they charge you for one piece of paper so you get 15 of those a month for free. 50 pages for month is $3. 100 pages per month is $5.00 and it goes up from there. Going over budget can cost as much as $0.10 per page so you need to be careful and really a page means anything you print on a piece of paper even if it's just one letter.

Using the service requires that your printer be connected to the Internet at all times. So for light users this is a great deal if your printer supports it

1987. Kindle on non-amazon devices

Kindle on non-amazon devices?

I am not a Kindle device person.  But I get many questions about Kindle.

Bottom line is - You do not need a Kindle device to read Kindle books—ones that you borrow from the Library or ones that you buy.
You can read them on a smartphone, tablet or computer using the free Kindle app or you can read them in an internet browser using Kindle Cloud Reader.

Of course an An Amazon account is required.  Good reading.

1985. Best way to download pictures from iPhone to PC.

I have a PC and an iPhone. What is the best way to download the photos to the PC?

There are a number of ways to do this. You can use iTunes, and of course you can always email your photos to yourself, and then on your PC you can open the email and save the picture on the PC.

Don't laugh, I actually do that sometimes.

Another way is to open up File Explorer and the iPhone will look like another drive and you can simply copy/cut and paste.

I find using MS Photos to be the easiest way for me. You can simply plug in the USB port and Photos will pop up. You can then copy or cut removing them from the iPhone or not and Photos will store the photos in folders with the date and time.

They all will work. Try and see which is best for you.
