1987. Kindle on non-amazon devices

Kindle on non-amazon devices?

I am not a Kindle device person.  But I get many questions about Kindle.

Bottom line is - You do not need a Kindle device to read Kindle books—ones that you borrow from the Library or ones that you buy.
You can read them on a smartphone, tablet or computer using the free Kindle app or you can read them in an internet browser using Kindle Cloud Reader.

Of course an An Amazon account is required.  Good reading.

1985. Best way to download pictures from iPhone to PC.

I have a PC and an iPhone. What is the best way to download the photos to the PC?

There are a number of ways to do this. You can use iTunes, and of course you can always email your photos to yourself, and then on your PC you can open the email and save the picture on the PC.

Don't laugh, I actually do that sometimes.

Another way is to open up File Explorer and the iPhone will look like another drive and you can simply copy/cut and paste.

I find using MS Photos to be the easiest way for me. You can simply plug in the USB port and Photos will pop up. You can then copy or cut removing them from the iPhone or not and Photos will store the photos in folders with the date and time.

They all will work. Try and see which is best for you.

1984. New web menus?

What are those three vertical dots and three/four horizontal bars on web pages.

Yes suddenly I started to see those and didn't realize immediately what they were for.

The Hamburger button. Yes that is what they are called. The hamburger button, so named for its unintentional resemblance to a hamburger, is a button typically placed in a top corner of a graphical user interface.

Its function is to toggle a menu or navigation bar between being collapsed behind the button or displayed on the screen. ... The wider button may be reduced to three vertically stacked dots.

So web site designers must have thought you didn't need to see the options, so I will just put those bar/dots and make you take an extra step to determine what you can do. I'm not sure I like the idea.BUT..

1983. Stream TV

I want to stop paying exorbitant fees to the cable company and just stream T.V. like I hear everyone else is doing. I need to get a live local T.V. channel sometimes. Is there some service that provides live T.V. on line?

If you live close to a major metropolitan area it may be that just an antenna is all you need to get over the air broadcasts. Because of the switch to digital broadcasting live T.V. feeds over the air look better than ever. We however live in a rural community and have no access to those over the air live broadcasts and so recently as my bandwidth increased because I moved, I started looking into streaming live T.V.

I discovered that there were 4 or 5 different options for getting live T.V. coverage. Netflix for example doesn't provide any live T.V. just stored content. So there had to be other options. I looked at Hulu T.V. I looked at YouTube T.V. and a few others. DIRECTV has their own live T.V. version.

I settled on YouTube T.V. The price is reasonable the D.V.R. capabilities are generous and the number of channels they support fits our needs. You'll need to investigate each of these services. But each of them has a free trial period you can use to see if it fits your needs or not . YouTube T.V. turned out well for us. You may decide that a different one works for you. Most of them cover live T.V. from local channels in major metropolitan areas.

1982. Copied on email threads? Get off of them.

I use G.-Mail and I recently got involved in an email thread with a lot of people and everyone kept responding. I got a ton of emails and I'm still getting emails from this thread. Is there any way to remove myself so I stop getting stupid emails?

I don't care about you've heard this from us before but the most important tip we can give about using email as a human being is never use Reply all unless everyone really needs to see the response. That's the 1st crime being committed here, 2nd if you just want to remove yourself from this thread which lots of people are breaking the law and using reply all it's pretty simple in G. Mail. Select one of the messages in this thread that find the little 3 dot menu above the list of messages or in your version of G. mail it might say more. Select that and find the mute option you can mute a thread and even though the thread will continue you won't hear any more about it. You won't get any more messages in that thread so you'll be rid of the family squabbles about where to go to dinner next Wednesday.

1981. Easy way to sell stuff.

I have a bunch of old toys that I need to get rid of. I think some of them actually have some real value. Can you suggest any way to sell them?

I recently tried to sell a treasure trove of 1960'S. era toys that had been kept in a closet since then. It's amazing how well some of those sold. Obviously things from the eighty's and in the ninety's are less likely to have value but Hot Wheels cars from the sixty's had serious collector value.

I posted them on E-bay and had good luck selling them. Craigslist is another alternative but you're less likely to get honest buyers on Craigslist.  I found E-bay to be reliable and safe as a way of selling toys. The most important thing is to find a reasonable value for your toys by researching on E-Bay to see what others are paying for them before you set your prices.

1980. Signature black in text and email

Every time I send an email there's a Text appended to the end of it indicating the program I used to send the e-mail.  I really don't want that there. Is there some way to change or remove this text?

Pretty much every email program allows you to set up a signature that you append to the end of every text message and most email applications have a default value for that signature or in your case obviously that default value is indicating what application was used to create the email. It's just free advertising for them.

You'll need to look in the options for your email and it might be in the options for your account within that email application to look for signatures. There you can delete it change it or make up your own a signature that you'd like to see appended to every message.

For example: I have Ken Getz attached to the end of every message so I don't have to type who it's from every single time. You can make up fancier signatures.  Doug uses one that has his company name and information and a disclaimer in his signature. It's up to you but you certainly don't have to use the paid advertising that you see in your e-mail outbox.

1979. Keep the same sell number and phone?

I'm tired of the super high fees I'm paying to my current cell phone provider and I'd like to move to another carrier. Can I keep the same phone number and can I use my existing phone?

You should be able to keep your same phone number when moving from one carrier to another. The concept of porting your cell phone number should be transparent and it should happen when you set up service on the new carrier. Just tell them you want to do that.

In terms of keeping your same phone however the issues aren't connected you can keep your number but get a new phone. The phone number and the phone aren't related really but in terms of keeping your same phone that is questionable. Some phones will work on multiple different sets of frequencies that different carriers use. Other phones are limited to a particular set of frequencies.

You'll need to ask when you're moving to the new carrier about your old phone, but one thing's for sure if you purchased your phone through a carrier you'll need to make sure that phone is unlocked from that carrier before you move it to a new one. If your phone is paid for your carrier should be able to unlock it for you. If you're still making payments they're unlikely to do that.

So in summary you can keep your old phone number. You may be able to keep your same phone.

1978. Finder Files

When I open finder on my mac it always shows me a list of files I don't care about I really wanted to open up showing me the files on my desktop I get tired of manually changing to that folder is there some way to have finer automatically open to show me the files on my desktop.

As someone who tends to store all my new documents either on my desktop or on my Dropbox folder I completely understand.

The solution is to open finder, go to the preferences for finder, and then into preferences. Under the general tab look for the option where you can select a new Finder window.  You can change that to be any folder you like including your personal folder, the desktop, your Documents folder, or any folder you might want to use that way.

When you open a Finder window it will open to your selected folder instead of what your mac wants to use.

1975. Windows 10 license

Remember when Microsoft gave that FREE upgrade to Window7 and 8 people to Windows 10. Well when you did the free upgrade it never provided a license code. The disk on that computer just died and I never followed your image backup tips, so now I can only install the original license. I will have to buy a Windows 10 license. That isn't fair. What's up with that?

Yes this is why Bill Gates is so rich. They force you into buying another license. Actually there is a way and for $10 Ken I will tell you.

When you upgraded you needed to enter your email address that you used when upgrading. It may be a MS email like joe@hotmail, your own domain email, or even a gmail or yahoo address. It is referred to at MS as your MS Account address.

So get a copy of your Windows PRO or Home install CD or image, install it on the new disk in the computer, and when it asks for the product key at initial install, don't enter a key. It will continue the install and after it is installed you will have 2-3 days to activate the license.

At that point enter your "MS Account information and wala it will license the Win 10 system. Isn't Bill great! https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12440/windows-10-activation

1977. AT&T 5G lies

AT&T 5G lies. AT&T Exec Defends '5GE' Amidst Backlash - Tom's Guide - What is it?

There is a lot of confusion. AT&T had announced that 5GE was available. Well it turns out they are testing it in 12 cities. But lets first define what 5G and 5GE is. First it is not from the WiFI systems that had 2.4 GHZ or 5 GHZWiFi. This was a frequency on WiFi. 2.4 was slower than 5 but could carry more information.

5G or 5GE is the "SERVICE" to be used by Cell carriers, There was 3G and 4G, and now soon to be 5GE. It is supposed to allow multi-megabit speeds and unlimited throughput. So to use it you will require a cell signal, that is 5GE and devices that support it. Ones that say they do not now will require updates.

Like we said it is only in test areas now. It will be fast and it will be able to handle streaming of videos. But it will also require a new device. We will discuss this as more information and dates are available.

1966. Philips Hue, and many, many more

I bought a new house, and I'd love to be able to have a switch next to my bed that can turn on and off some lights. But there's no switch there. I don't have the skills to wire a new switch. Is there some technology that would allow me to switch lights on and off remotely without a wired switch?

Funny about that because I just got a new house and I have lights on my bed and no switches to turn them on and off. It must be a question from me.

I've been researching this a lot lately and yes there is one solution that is to replace the light switches with some sort of smart switch but I didn't want to do that in this new house. Instead I was looking for some way to control the lights with my voice or with some other technology that wouldn't involve rewiring things and I think I found a good solution. There are lots of options in this area but using smart bulbs can somehow sometimes make things work better.

Certainly in my case for the lights by the bed what I really want is some way to say Alexa turn off the lights and have it turn off the lights and obviously Alexa, that is from Amazon is where I'll probably go. I've looked at several different technologies for the lights and I've ended up with Philips Hou that H U E for the light bulbs. They allow me to change colors or brightness and they are smart bulbs that can be connected to Alexa and other smart technologies and it's easy to manage them. No rewiring. It's all done magically wirelessly.

I'll be using Alexa and Phillips Hou bulbs to turn on and off lights in my new home.

1968. Smart doors

I'm looking into smart locks for my doors, so that I can get into my house without using a key. I notice that some products support a technology called Z-wave, and others support Zigbee. Are these the same thing? Are they compatible? Will devices that work with one work with the other?

The short answer is no. In general is Z-wave and ZigBee are 2 completely different technologies and they do not work together. On the other hand there are hubs - that is products that act as a hub between them which will allow you to use both technologies. I would suggest picking one or the other for your smart products and sticking to the just that technology.

Both technologies are short wave. That is short distance wireless technologies that use low power for connecting smart devices. The whole topic is new, complicated and boggles my mind. When I start to think about it I can never remember which feature of which product works with which technology. So pay  careful attention and understand that products that work with ZigBee won't necessarily work with Z-wave products.

For example I have a smart doorbell and smart lock on my door and the theory is since they both use Z-wave. If I see someone at the door in the video doorbell I should be able to unlock the door for them using remote control because they both use Z-wave technology.

Check it out - pay careful attention. They really are not compatible with each other in general.

1969. 1GB service

I really would like to be able to stream movies at 4K resolution, so I signed up for Comcast's fastest service: 1Gigabyte. It seems like it's working, but when I test the speed using speedtest.net, we're only getting speeds like 300 or 400K , rather than the 1000K I was expecting. Am I getting cheated?

The 1st question for any sane human being is do you really need one gigabyte of throughput from Comcast? I ask this because I'm the one who signed up for the one gigabyte and yes I wonder sometimes if I'm sane or if I need one gigabyte

The fact is that for streaming 4K. videos you don't need that kind of throughput . On the other hand I download lots of big files and I'd like them to be as fast as possible. So I signed up for it. It didn't cost that much more than the lower level of service but the fact is when I signed up and when I got it installed I did a test and yes I was only getting 300-400K. and I asked the installer what was up and he said well let's try it on a wired connection not a wireless connection.

I was using my own wireless router and perhaps that was a problem. So I hooked my computer up to a wired connection and lo and behold I got very close to one gigabyte of throughput . So basically what I was paying for.

The problem is on wireless connections. You're often swamping at the speed that the wireless connection can offer. In other words the wireless connection itself can't offer a full gigabit of data throughput, so in my case I need better wireless not better Internet connection from Comcast. But really think about how much you really need in terms of throughput - a gigabyte might be overkill.

1967. Ethernet ride.

I need to connect a device to my network using an Ethernet cable, rather than wirelessly. But I don't have a wired connection available to me. Is there some way to convert a wireless signal to a wired connection, so I can add this device to my network?

Again this is one of those questions that  is actually my question and it required some research to find a good answer to. At our rehearsal studio where I work we have wired connection one room and wireless in another but I needed to hook up a wired object to my network and didn't know how to do it.

I found something called a wireless range extender. A range extender is useful for as it sounds like extending the range of your wireless network a range extender has wireless radios in it one to receive a signal and another to send out a signal to extend the wireless range and that's useful but not for this situation.

The one I found from Netgear also has an Ethernet jack attached and it can act as an Ethernet bridge it connects the wireless network and receives the signal and then sends that signal through the cable to my device. So if you find yourself attempting to hook up a device which only accepts a wired connection to your wireless network look for a Netgear Range Extender . That device may be able to do the job for you

1976. Ethernet wire

I want to have Ethernet wired speed at the other end of the barn. It is farther than 300 ft. that the Ethernet wire can perform.

Ken you keep using the word barn. When did you ever have a barn? OK the specification for wired Ethernet does say 300+ feet. The newer Ethernet cables like CAT 6 or 7 will probably add some distance to the signal but you may give up some speed and quality.

If you can place another switch in between the cable at 250 ft that will solve the problem, but I am sure you don't have electricity in the pasture.

I do have a problem like this and I found some electronic solutions that provide running Ethernet over a single pair of copper wires. The product is called StarTech Ethernet extender kit and cost about $225.00. It consists of two devices, one in the farm house and one in the barn. All you need is a pair of telco (2 wires) and electricity from the wind mill and you can have Ethernet for over 1 mile.

OK I will stop the farm jokes. It works for me at 700 ft. I don't get 1G speed but I do get over 100MPS. Give it a try.

1974. IOS

My iPhone is fully charged, and then rapidly looses the charge. This doesn't happen all the time but I really don't want to buy a new iPhone or pay for a new battery yet. What's up.

Yep. It happens. This usually happens after an update to IOS. Especially with IOS 11. Before you buy a new phone or battery, drain the battery fully, Charge the battery. Try this a couple of times.

If the battery works better, do this at least once a month. And after an IOS update.

Another issue may be caused by charging your phone by plugging into a USB port that doesn't meet the charging requirements defined by Apple. Try charging the iPhone with the official charging cable and AC adapter. If things work better you know it maybe that USB port. https://www.zdnet.com/article/iphones-battery-draining-fast-heres-how-to-fix-it/ and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8180334

1973.Battery - mouse/keyboard.

Suddenly my computer froze up. My mouse or keyboad stops working. I hope I don't need a new computer.

Mouse and Keyboard Batteries: Often a person thinks that their computer has locked up because they can’t move around with their mouse or the keyboard is slow to respond to typing.

If this happens, one thing you can try before you shut down and restart your computer is to put a new battery in your mouse when it won’t move, or in your keyboard when it appears to respond slowly to see if it will resolve the problem.

Often low batteries will create these issues. If you still see no response the next thing to try is a CTRL+ALT+Del key, hold them down for 5 seconds. If you get a menu that pops up see if you can select the Task Manager. In the resource tab list the applications by CPU with the highest on top.. You may have a rouge program that is using the CPU and if you can END Task that also may stop the problem. If all else fails hold the power button down for 10 seconds. That should cause it to boot. Do give the batteries a look first.

1972. Other office products

What about other Office products like LibraOffice.

https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-free-office-software

There are other options for Office type products. Some options are LibreOffice, Google Docs, MS Office Online, WPS Office and Polaris Office are a few.

The issue you may have with these options is the compatibility between them and the Microsoft full office product we are all familiar with. If the documents you create are kept within your control then you should have no problems using these products. If however you send or receive these documents with others, people may have a difficulty reading them or you may not be able to read their documents.

Of the 5 products I have only seen the first three. LibreOffice, Google docs, and Office online. I suggest looking at the Google docs and Office online for the best results. These products also do not allow yow you to download the products. They are only available online. So give Google docs, and Office Online a look to see if these may work for you.

1971. Is Beta better?

I noticed that I can download and install a beta version of Apple's latest version of iOS. I like the look of the new features. Should I install the beta and give it a try now?

Apple along with several other companies started the process of having public betas of their software a few years back. A beta release is called that because it isn't finished yet. It hasn't been tested and the short answer your question is no, matter how tempting it is, no matter how much you want the features, do not install beta software on your IOS device.

If you're a developer creating applications, sure you have to do that because you have to test them before you ship the application with the new version of the operating system. But for normal people like us beta versions of operating systems will only cause you heartache. I don't know how to say this enough times, it's tempting, it's free, it's flashy and shiny, don't do it. Don't ever install a beta operating system on your IOS. device.

1970. More on Backups

I know I need to back up my computer, but I'm not organized enough to hook up a drive and do the backup. Is there some sort of way to automatically back up the computer regularly?

As you probably know if you've been listening to us for any length of time Doug and I are both fanatics about backing up our data. The worst thing that could happen in terms of data would be to lose it because of some catastrophic problem or just even a stupid key press. So we do a lot of backups.

I'm very fond of online backups and use an online service that basically takes any changes to any file in my network and saves it on the cloud somewhere. At this time the service I use is no longer being offered for home users so I won't recommend it, but the most highly recommended service for online backups is called back blaze.

You can find them at https://www.backblaze.com/.  Their prices are reasonable and they work with both MAC and Windows. They don't work with Linux however so if that's an issue you won't be able to use them.

Check out https://www.backblaze.com/ for more information about performing automatic online backups.

Now nothing can take the place of a good local backup especially if you're doing an image backup of your entire hard drive. Online backups are always just file by file backups. So that if your computer got lost or ruined, he'd have to re-install the operating system, reinstall your applications, and then get your data from wherever it was backed up. But it's still better than not having a backup. So if you can't get yourself together to do a USB drive backup, online backup is the next best thing and perhaps even worth having in addition to a local backup.
